Once the skin is right, makeup becomes a different proposition. A considered edit of what actually deserves a place in your bag.
There is a particular moment when a makeup bag stops being useful.
It starts innocently enough. A new lipstick here. A foundation that looked wonderful under someone else’s bathroom lighting. A blush bought because the colour was irresistible in the shop. Then the half-used products gather, the duplicates multiply, and somehow the bag ends up containing everything except the things you actually reach for.
The answer isn’t necessarily to buy better storage.
It might be to own less.
After all, if good skin is the starting point, makeup doesn’t need to do quite so much. It doesn’t need to transform your face. It doesn’t need to conceal every trace of real life. And it certainly doesn’t need to involve twelve steps before you’ve had your first coffee.
Even out a little. Add some colour. Define the eyes. Give the lips something. Make everything look a little more awake.
That’s about it.
Once you know that, the bag becomes much easier to edit.
A good base, concealer, blush, mascara, brow product and something for the lips will take you remarkably far. Everything else should have to justify its space.
That doesn’t mean there isn’t room for something more dramatic.
Quite the opposite.
When the everyday makeup is simple, a red lip or a beautifully smoky eye feels like a choice rather than another layer.

The base should still look like skin
This is where the previous rule matters most.
If you’ve started with skincare that suits your skin, you shouldn’t immediately cover it with something designed to make it look like something else.
For everyday makeup, look for a base that evens rather than erases.
A skin tint, lightweight foundation or sheer-to-medium coverage formula can be enough. Add concealer only where you actually need it — around the nose, beneath the eyes, over the occasional blemish.
There is something much more modern about seeing a little texture, a little colour and a little life in someone’s face than seeing a flawless surface from forehead to chin.

Blush does more work than you think
If there is one category worth paying attention to, it’s blush.
A good blush can make the entire face look more finished without making it look more made-up.
Cream and liquid formulas are particularly useful because they can be tapped onto the cheeks with fingers and blended without much thought. The same colour can often be softened across the bridge of the nose or tapped onto the lips.
